Looking out for others

Sometimes the smallest gestures can make a huge difference

We believe that being kind to others and looking out for them is a basic human behaviour.  the smallest gesture that you make can change a persons day or even save a life.  never underestimate the power of the question "are you ok ?".  We have had cards created that ask that is question that we leave behind in the schools we visit.  If you see one you know one of us has been to your school! Please let us know when you spot one !

Things to look out for
There are many things that can for in order to identify if someone is not quite right, a lot of this is reliant on you be part of a community that knows each other, and is developing an openness about sharing feelings and mental health issues.

One of the first things that someone who is suffering with a mental health issue will do is give up on their pleasurable activities.  So if a colleague says " I didn't make it to zumba last night" make a mental note and  check in next week to see if they have attended then. If they have  not, then it might be time to  ask them if they are ok.

Pride in personal appearance can also goes by the wayside quite quickly. just be aware of what your colleagues are wearing, same pair of trousers for 10 days ? Jumper with a stain for a few days?

Change in outlook is also something to be aware of.  have they suddenly become more pessimistic or carefree, are they getting angry quicker? more teary?

Whilst these suggestions are in no way exhaustive they may give you an early warning of someone who is suffering and as always early intervention is better than a waiting for things to get worse.
